My Latest Feature for Tutorista Magazine

When Tutorista Magazine invited me to write an article entitled "Raising Confident Readers & Bold Thinkers," I surprised even myself by quite how much I had to say! So, settle down with a cuppa and enjoy a deeper dive into one of the topics I am most passionate about.

Written for both parents and educators, the article is packed with practical, easy-to-implement ideas that help children move beyond simply answering comprehension questions. My aim is to show how strong reading skills can become the foundation for richer thinking, greater curiosity, and the confidence to question, connect and communicate ideas.

If you've ever felt that a child can read the words on the page but isn't quite getting to the heart of the text—or struggles to express what they understand in writing—I hope you'll find plenty of inspiration here.

Above all, it's an invitation to think differently about comprehension: not as an end goal, but as the starting point for raising confident readers and bold thinkers. I hope it sparks a few ideas you can try at home or in the classroom.

"In her innovative Mission and Supercharge book series, educator Melissa Oshungbure is transforming the way children experience English learning. Designed for both classroom and home use, the books combine academic rigour with creativity, offering pupils structured support while nurturing curiosity and independent thinking.

The Mission series, including Mission: Comprehension: Learn Through Puzzles! and Mission: Vocabulary: Learn Through Puzzles!, consists of two complementary workbooks that strengthen core literacy skills through crosswords, cloze exercises, creative writing, reverse comprehensions, and visual puzzles. Rather than presenting English as isolated skills to practise, the books immerse learners in rich subject content drawn from history, science, geography, and contemporary life. The result is a deeper understanding of language and meaning, carefully scaffolded for pupils from Year 4 through to beyond Year 6, making the series particularly suitable for 11+ preparation and Year 6 SATs.

Alongside this, the Supercharge series extends the same philosophy while broadening its reach into future-focused thinking and innovation."

"The Mission and Supercharge book series by educator Melissa Oshungbure features innovative, puzzle-packed workbooks that transform learning into an exciting adventure, building deep comprehension, powerful vocabulary, creative problem-solving, and bold thinking.

Educator and tutor Melissa Oshungbure, widely known as Mrs. Osh, has created an innovative series of workbooks that transform English learning for primary school children. Moving away from repetitive drills and isolated skill practice, the Mission and Supercharge series integrates language development with rich content from history, science, geography, and real-world scenarios. These books provide structured support while fostering curiosity, deep thinking, problem-solving, and independence. Suitable for both home and classroom use, they target children in upper Key Stage 2 (Years 4–6 and beyond), supporting preparation for SATs, 11+ exams, and lifelong academic confidence.

Oshungbure’s approach emphasizes that high expectations, meaningful material, and appropriate scaffolding lead to purposeful effort and natural growth in confidence. Strong language skills serve as a foundation not only for better exam performance but also for clear expression, critical thinking, and resilience across all subjects and throughout life."
