To tie in with the launch of my summer writing competition set in our local woodlands (see below), here is a puzzle to complete with your family. Covering history, science, English and maths this crossword is a great way to help your children learn about their environment as well as helpful spelling and vocabulary practice. Have fun! We live in such a beautiful place – wouldn’t it be wonderful to imagine something magical that happens there? You can write in any genre you like – adventure, fantasy, poetry, mystery or even horror!
How to enter Your poem or story must not be longer than 250 words and you must have written it all yourself. No help from parents or big brothers or sisters allowed! Type it up (or ask an adult to help with that part) and email to [email protected] by Saturday 17th August. Remember to tell me your name and age! How it will be judged First and foremost, your writing will be judged on enjoyment. Consider your reader – will they be entertained? What will make them want to keep reading? Would they love it enough to share it with other people? The purpose of writing is to share our stories, so keep the reader in mind while you write – how do you want them to feel? Depending on age, the judges will also be looking for some great vocabulary and imagery to bring your writing alive. Lastly, the judges will be keen to know you have tried your best to use the correct spellings, grammar and punctuation – so give that your full attention too. The judges will be three local A level students of English. They all love to read and write creatively and can’t wait to see what you can create! This weekend, try out a crossword that covers current affairs and the primary curriculum. Not only a fantastic conversation starter, it also offers educational benefits. Crosswords can significantly improve vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension skills, making them an excellent tool for learning.
