Proofreading practice

Children often find checking their own work a dull task, and they can easily miss mistakes because they are too close to the content they have carefully crafted.

Typing up pieces of children’s work exactly as they were written and then asking them to proofread can feel more like being the teacher than simply checking their own writing. It is often easier to spot errors in someone else’s work, as children have more distance from the text and are seeing it for the first time.

Why not print this example from one of my classes and see how many corrections your child can spot? They could even take it a step further by editing the piece too, thinking carefully about word choices and sentence structure.
